Bangalore:

A public bus caught fire on a busy road in Bengaluru this morning as the driver was starting the engine.

The alert driver swung into action and immediately emptied the bus, ensuring that no one was injured in the fire, Bengaluru Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) sources said.

The bus belongs to Koramangala depot.

Videos taken by passers-by show the bus on fire and plumes of smoke billowing from it as firefighters try to extinguish it.

According to BMTC sources, the engine caught fire when the driver switched on the ignition on MG Road. Prima facie, it appears that the engine had overheated, they added.

There were 30 passengers on the bus at the time of the fire, but the vigilant driver evacuated them in time and alerted the fire brigade, the sources said.

BMTC officials are at the spot to investigate the cause of the fire. Appropriate action will be taken once the report is ready, BMTC sources said.
