KSU demands cancellation of NOC for temple construction to avoid similar precedents

The East Jaintia Hills District Khasi Students’ Union has demanded cancellation of the No Objection Certificate or NOC for construction of a Hindu temple on government land in the district.

The East Jaintia Hills district of KSU made this demand in a letter submitted to the Deputy Commissioner of East Jaintia Hills district, Shivansh Awasthi, IAS.

According to the East Jaintia Hills district of KSU, they have learnt that a no-objection certificate (NOC) has been issued for the construction of a Hindu temple on a 500 sq. ft. land, which is a government land near U Mot Woh Kiang Nangbah. Another 250 sq. ft. has also been allocated for the construction of toilets.

Expressing its opposition to granting NOC for construction on government land, the KSU said, “We strongly believe that it is not appropriate for any individual, group, society or religious body to be granted permission to use government land for religious or personal purposes.”

They also felt that allowing such a precedent could potentially lead to further demands for use of government land by various groups in the future, which could have negative effects on the well-being of society.
