Same-sex marriages: Supreme Court plans public hearing

NEW DELHI: Chief Justice of India (CJI) DY Chandrachud on Tuesday said he would consider the request for public hearing on pleas seeking review of his same-sex marriage verdict, but said since it is a review petition before a constitution court, he cannot unilaterally decide to list the matter for public hearing.

A five-member constitutional court, headed by the CJI, is scheduled to consider its October 17, 2023 judgment, which refused to grant legal backing to same-sex marriage, at 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday. Lawyers for the petitioners had argued on Tuesday that a public hearing would allow for a more transparent and thorough examination of the issues at stake.
