Aso-Rock, Abuja – President Bola Tinubu has welcomed the Supreme Court’s decision to affirm the constitutional rights of local governments, saying it is a historic victory for the country’s federal system.

Tinubu believes that inefficiency in local government has hampered Nigeria’s progress, and it is now up to local council leaders to ensure that citizens receive people-centred services.

Tinubu explained why he went to court

According to a statement from the presidency, shortly after the judgment on Thursday, July 11, the president filed a lawsuit to ensure that only locally elected officials control the people’s resources, which came as a relief to Nigerians.

He promised that his administration would make public what was sent to local government accounts and that grassroots citizens would not hold their council presidents to account.

The judgment affirms that legitimate means can be used to restructure the country and the economy, making Nigeria a better and more just society.

Tinubu notes that the emasculation of local governments has hampered the delivery of essential services, including road construction, security and public goods.

He commends the Attorney General of the Federation for his efforts and reaffirms his commitment to protecting the principles of the charter governing citizens and government.

The statement reads in part:

“This country belongs to all of us. With this judgment, our people, especially the poorest, will be able to hold their local leaders to account for their actions and inactions. What is paid into local government accounts will be known and services will now have to be provided without excuse.”
