BBC Radio Cambridgeshire – BBC Radio Cambridgeshire, Bobby Seagull shocked by racist messages

A maths teacher and TV presenter has received hundreds of racist comments, including threats of violence, after discussing Gareth Southgate’s record compared to recent England managers.

Bobby Seagull, former captain of Cambridge University’s Emmanuel College team in the University Challenge, said he felt “sadness, pity and anger” after a flood of comments on his social media.

He posted a clip from Jeremy Vine’s show praising Southgate’s performance as manager, which has been viewed 1.6 million times.

He said: “When someone of British Indian origin talks about football it should be fine, but it’s obviously attracted a lot of people on social media.”

Mr Seagull was shocked by the barrage of abuse he would expect from a politically charged post, but not from a clip about football statistics.
