Liverpool’s new manager has already set the standard after rejecting Arne Slot’s offer

Arne Slot has confirmed he offered new Reds goalkeeping coach Fabian Otte an extended break after the Copa America, but he decided to cut his holiday short.

Otte had worked as the goalkeeping coach for the United States men’s national team during their disastrous Copa America campaign, which saw the team eliminated in the group stage. While the United States had started their tournament well with a 2-0 win over Bolivia, an embarrassing 2-1 loss to Panama, coupled with a defeat to Uruguay, saw them exit the competition they were hosting.

Following that poor season, Gregg Berhalter was sacked. Otte, who previously worked for Borussia Mönchengladbach, had been given an extension of his leave by Slot before taking up the position of Liverpool’s head goalkeeping coach.

However, a week after that break, the 33-year-old instead opted to cut his holiday short, arriving in Merseyside to report for pre-season training at the AXA academy.

“Fabian was with the American team, unfortunately for him they were eliminated from the tournament,” Slot explains. “I gave him a few weeks off but he said he wanted to come right away.

“He’s already here now after a week’s holiday and that’s what we like to see – although having a holiday is also important! We want to see the players and staff come in early and help us have a good season.”
