Midsomer Murders star Neil Dudgeon has shared his thoughts on the possibility of being ‘cancelled’ after taking over as John Nettles in the beloved ITV drama.

Taking on the role of DCI John Barnaby, cousin of Nettles’ character DCI Tom Barnaby, Neil joined the series in its 14th season.

In a candid conversation with Radio Times magazine, Neil spoke about the daunting task of replacing the show’s lead detective. “It was difficult at first because John (Nettles) had done it for 14 years,” he admitted.

Neil also expressed relief at not being fired after his first season, saying, “If they had cancelled me after one season, it would have been embarrassing! It’s getting easier, but I try to keep things fresh. Even if I’ve read the script 50 times, I’ll look at it again and have another idea.”

He continued to express his satisfaction with the role: “It’s always extremely enjoyable and I’m extremely grateful.”

The next series will see the return of Nick Hendrix as Barnaby’s loyal sidekick, reports the Express.

Earlier this year, viewers were shocked to see TV series Midsomer Murders disappear from the schedule after just one episode, replaced by ITV thriller Red Eye starring Richard Armitage. This sparked a wave of complaints from fans who felt that the single episode aired was “pointless”.

Luckily for fans, ITV has announced the return date for Midsomer Murders, which is set to resume on Tuesday, July 16 at 8:15pm.
