‘She shouldn’t exist,’ complain Coronation Street fans, who claim the actress was ‘stung’ by a ‘horrible’ character

Viewers are annoyed with Coronation Street bosses for wasting a brilliant actress’ potential on a “horrible” character.

Claire Sweeney first appeared in Weatherfield as homeless drug addict Cassie Plumber in 2023.

The character managed to get his life back on track and find a job in a garage so he could finally get closer to his son, Tyrone.

However, in the last episodes, she began to annoy viewers with her “arrogant” attitude, and some even begged the producers to remove her from the show.

Cassie lost her job at the garage when she insulted Abi Webster, claiming she believed fake pornographic videos of her circulating online were real.

Abi’s husband Kevin was furious to hear the accusation, as Cassie suggested his boss’s wife had simply filmed the footage while she was high and forgotten about it.

In order to earn some money, the mother volunteered to care for the injured Ken Barlow for a fraction of the price a caregiver would normally charge.

After going into labor, she befriended her relative Steve McDonald, leaving fans to speculate that the pair will eventually start dating.

But some people aren’t happy with the idea and say Steve deserves better.

In an online forum, one Corrie fan grumbled: “It would be nice if the writers actually made a change and NOT paired Steve with someone who thinks they’re too good for him.

“Steve was constantly told ‘how lucky’ he was to have Michelle and Tracey-Luv acted in the same way, eventually leaving him for someone she saw as an ‘improvement’.

“Cassie comes across as quite arrogant towards Steve. At first, she told him that she only spent a short time at the speed dating party because she felt sorry for him and was constantly making fun of him.

“Seeing Steve in a relationship where he’s ‘tolerated’ until someone better comes along is old hat. Especially when a character has few redeeming qualities, like Tracey-Luv and Cassie.”

Another person said they wouldn’t be happy if Cassie didn’t end up with Steve; they want her kicked out of Weatherfield altogether.

They wrote: “God forbid. I just want her gone for good.”

A third ranted: “Cassie is a mistake, she shouldn’t exist. Claire Sweeney was set up and given a made up character that is just horrible.”
