King Charles Shares Personal Message After England Football Team Win (And Signs It With His Unique Signature)

After the England men’s football team scored the winning goal in the UEFA EURO 2024 semi-final match against the Netherlands, His Royal Highness King Charles took to social media to share his congratulations in the form of a personally written message. And how do we know the letter was written by the king himself? The 75-year-old monarch signed the note with his own nickname.

Alongside a photo of the men’s athletes who make up the England men’s football team, Her Majesty wrote in the caption: “My wife and I join our whole family in wishing you our warmest congratulations on reaching the final of the UEFA European Championship, and our very best wishes for Sunday’s match.”

The message continued: “If I can encourage you to get the win before you need last minute goals or another penalty shootout drama, I’m sure the stress on the nation’s heart rate and blood pressure would be greatly eased! Good luck, England.”

Before finishing his message, King Charles signed it with his unique signature: “Charles R.” Some longtime royal admirers may recall that the king’s late mother, Queen Elizabeth II, also signed letters with her unique signature, often writing “Elizabeth R.” at the end of a document. In this case, the letter “R” stood for “Rex,” which is the Latin translation of the word “king,” and in Elizabeth’s case, the “R” stood for “Regina,” which means “queen.”

King Charles wasn’t the only member of the royal family to celebrate the England men’s soccer team’s victory on social media. In fact, Prince William (who recently attended England’s UEFA EURO quarter-final against Switzerland at the Düsseldorf Arena) also wrote a congratulatory message and posted it on the Instagram page he shares with his wife, Kate Middleton.

Alongside an artistic poster of England’s star players, the Prince of Wales wrote: “What a beauty, Ollie! Congratulations @englad! #EURO2024 finalists (celebrating horn emoji. W.)”
