Adrian Newey sends message to all potential F1 teams amid latest Ferrari rumours

Adrian Newey’s potential F1 teams may have to wait a few more months to make his decision as the design guru says he will not make a “snap decision” on his future.

In fact, he always wants a real break for fear of arriving at the new team “tired”.

Adrian Newey ‘won’t make quick decision’ on his future

Although it has been more than 10 weeks since Newey and Red Bull announced he would leave the team in the first quarter of 2025, the 25-time championship winner is no closer to deciding his future.

Stepping away from his F1 design duties to focus on the development of the RB17, Red Bull’s first hypercar, Newey was present at a handful of races, including the most recent Grand Prix at Silverstone.

There he was spotted on the grid sketching out details of the rivals’ upgrades, prompting Sky Sports’ Ted Kravitz to say it was the biggest hint yet that Newey would not retire but instead join another team.

But while almost every team from Ferrari to Williams has expressed interest, Newey says he will not rush into a decision.

“It wasn’t a big surprise when other teams showed interest after I announced my departure, but I won’t make a quick decision about my future,” he told the Times.

“I needed a break to think about whether I could try my luck in F1 again. I also didn’t want to risk stagnating.

“There are some drivers, like Lewis Hamilton and Fernando Alonso, who I would have loved to work with, but until now it was neither the right place nor the right time for us to meet.

“I got on extremely well with Nigel Mansell at Williams, even though he had a Marmite character, and with Max Verstappen, with whom it was an immense pleasure to work at Red Bull.

“I don’t know what the future holds for me, but instead of racing around the world to Grand Prix races this summer, I’ll be able to see my family. In June, Mandy and I took our two Bernard doodles, Yogi and Benji, for a week’s ride along the south coast, which was great fun.”

Adrian Newey says Ferrari was turned down

Newey’s latest comment on his future comes as the Italian edition of Sports car claims to have rejected Ferrari’s offer in favour of joining a UK-based team if he continues in Formula 1.

Although Newey’s conversations with Ferrari team boss Fred Vasseur have gone “beyond the typical preliminary conversation to a detailed proposal,” the publication reports that not only do Ferrari not want to be involved in an “upward bidding war on wages,” they want someone to do so.

Stating that priorities have changed since they began speaking with the design legend, they say Ferrari are looking for a “priority figure rather than a consultant” which, as Newey had made clear, was more the role he would be interested in.

So their talks failed while Newey’s with Aston Martin intensified, as did those with McLaren.

While it has been widely reported that Newey recently paid a private visit to Aston Martin’s new headquarters at Silverstone, the Italian publication claims there have been rumours of a “surprise ending” with Newey returning to McLaren.

While Newey is in no rush to make a decision, F1 rumours still have time to speculate…
