What FA sources believe is possible as they consider approach for Eddie Howe at Newcastle

Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe could soon be the subject of interest from the FA and England.

The Three Lions could potentially be looking for a new manager very soon, following England’s Euro 2024 final defeat to Spain.

Gareth Southgate couldn’t get the job done, ultimately leaving his future as manager uncertain.

His contract expires in December and it was reported last week that the FA would like Southgate to continue as manager.

Gareth Southgate’s future could impact Eddie Howe and Newcastle United

It doesn’t matter for the result, and it now remains to be seen what Southgate’s decision will be.

Given England’s defeat, it seems likely that Southgate will leave. That is something Tyneside fears, as Newcastle United know Eddie Howe will be a contender to replace him.

Boys Geordie Boots We were told earlier this year that Howe was one of the FA’s top targets to replace Southgate as England manager, and it looks set to be the case.

England interested in Eddie Howe

Eddie Howe is a “serious” target for England if they are to appoint a new manager, according to The Times.

They add that while an approach for Howe would involve first obtaining permission from Newcastle United’s owners, The Times has been told by its sources that there is a belief that a deal with Toon officials would be possible.

The Telegraph have also reported that Howe is an option for England, while they also name Thomas Tuchel, Mauricio Pochettino, Graham Potter and Lee Carsley as suitors.

Let’s hope Howe stays at Newcastle

While Newcastle could end up giving Howe permission to speak to England if there was an approach, that does not mean he would accept any offer that was presented to him.

It would be a difficult decision for the 46-year-old to make, as the opportunity to lead his country does not come along often. It would be a unique opportunity for Howe to work with a golden generation of England players, leading them to a World Cup they should have a chance of winning.

But Howe only knows club football. He is a coach, someone who enjoys working with his players on the training pitch and making them better day by day. He couldn’t do that if he were England manager, which would mean giving up what he is most passionate about.

On top of that, he still has work to do at Newcastle United, even though he has lost two of his closest allies in Amanda Staveley and Mehrdad Ghodoussi.

Selfishly, it would be great if Southgate continued to lead the England team, as it would put an end to all the speculation. However, it seems the speculation is only just beginning…
