Japanese-Inspired Home in Kauai Blends Heritage-Style Architecture with Tesla Power

This Japanese-influenced home in Kauai channels Hawaii’s historic architecture, although it was only built in 2018, according to real estate agent Matt Beall.

“The design is a tribute to the legacy of Hawaii’s original plantation-style architecture, which was influenced primarily by Japanese design,” Beall said. The exterior is made of Japanese cypress, selected for its durability and aesthetic quality, and is treated with a refined Japanese wood preservation technique called shou sugi bangiving it both beauty and resistance to bad weather.

Jon Kegle of Cogent Designs, known for creating luxury homes on Kauai, built the home. The interior designer was Barbara Camerson of Yochi Design, who, with Kegle, focused on quality materials, using custom Italian mahogany doors and windows by Albertini, as well as integrating the design with Kauai’s natural landscape. The result is a home that prioritizes natural light and indoor-outdoor living, incorporating a large covered lanai and strategic views of the ocean and surrounding mountains.

“There are a lot of homes in Kukui’ula that were built to sell. Some of them may be pretty, but they’re not very durable. This home doesn’t compromise on attention to detail or the use of high-quality, durable materials, making it durable and livable as well as beautiful,” Beall said.

The 4,490-square-foot home has four bedrooms and four and a half bathrooms spread over two floors and sits on nearly an acre of land.

Outside, a 1,288-square-foot covered veranda runs the length of the home and includes an outdoor kitchen and barbecue area, as well as a dining area. A heated in-ground pool is set into the lawn and complemented by an outdoor shower.

The grounds, designed by local landscape architect Jason Umemoto, include a private garden with shou sugi ban “The inspiration for the garden came from the owner’s travels around the world,” Beall said. “Umemoto worked collaboratively to integrate and adapt the mature landscaping to the unique character of the property.”

The property is located in Kukui’ula, a private master-planned club community, which features an array of exclusive amenities including tennis and pickleball courts, and a highly rated 18-hole Tom Weiskopf-designed golf course complete with a golf clubhouse.
