Google Messages full screen effects are coming back

Google Messages full screen effects are coming back

With the “Show expressive animations” setting now widely rolled out, Google Messages is once again rolling out full-screen effects.

Screen effects occur briefly (for a few seconds) on the Google Messages app when you send or receive certain phrases in SMS and RCS conversations.

They were first introduced in late November and popped up earlier this year, particularly around Valentine’s Day, but were removed after that.

This expressive feature is now back and working with more triggers. As of today, we’re seeing them in both the stable (build 20240621_00_RC00) and beta channels. This comes as users can now disable screen effects, as well as reaction effects and animated emojis.

  • Booo: Tomatoes, with at least three o’s required
  • Congratulations: Balloons and confetti
  • Go to the beach: Waves + various objects
  • Hahahahaha: Tube man. Four ha are needed
  • Rise and Shine: The Sun, Quite Lovely

Oddly enough, “I love you” and “That sounds good” no longer work. It’s possible that these expressions are too common in everyday conversations.

Google had originally promised “15+ hidden screen effect prompt words.”
