Music Of Silent Horror Classic Comes Alive At Cinema Salem

SALEM, MA — A classic silent film-era horror film will come alive at Cinema Salem in September as the North Shore-based Arpeggione ensemble will play the original score of the 1922 film “Nosferatu: A Symphony of Horror” to accompany a screening.

Ten classical musicians, using historical instruments, will perform the original Hans Erdmann score using early 20th-century instruments, including the harmonium, flute, clarinet and strings on Sept. 22 at 7 p.m.

“Nosferatu will share Arpeggione’s unique, immersive chamber music performances with a wider audience,” said Arpeggione co-director Andrea LeBlanc. “We try to push the boundaries of what chamber music performances can be, from collaborating with dancers to staging theater productions that tell local stories.

“Working in the medium of silent film widens that scope even more.”

“Nosferatu” is the earliest adaptation of Bram Stoker’s “Dracula.”

Arpeggione is a nonprofit organization that performs a full season of concerts on the North Shore, with outreach programs that bring the same world-class programming to underserved audiences.
Arpeggione aims to create community through shared artistic experiences and brings beloved masterpieces out of the concert hall to those who would not normally be able to experience them live.

“Nosferatu” performers are: Andrea LeBlanc, flute; Thomas Carroll and Elise Bonhivert, clarinets; Lisa Brooke and Emily Hale, violins; Anna Seda, cello; Guinevere Conner, bass; April Sun, piano; and George Wiese, harmonium.
