This isn’t the first time Violet has spoken out against the effects of long COVID. She’s often photographed going out wearing an N95 mask, a medical-grade mask that was widely considered the best protection against COVID infection at its peak. In recent years, speculation has mounted about why she continues to wear a mask.

Of course, it’s not that unusual for public figures to wear a mask in public. Stars like Kylie Jenner and Jennifer Lawrence often cover up to protect their privacy and keep out the paparazzi. For Violet, however, it’s a cause that’s much bigger than privacy.

On July 9, the teenager appeared at a Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors meeting, where she said she contracted a “post-viral” illness in 2019.

When the audience was invited to comment, the 18-year-old spoke passionately about her struggles with a health condition in recent years and advocated for more mask mandates.

“I contracted a post-viral illness in 2019,” she said. “I am fine now, but I have seen for myself that medicine does not always have an answer to the consequences of a virus, even a minor one. The COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted this fact.”

While she did not specify whether she had been diagnosed with long COVID, Violet highlighted the “devastating” effects of the disease, calling for better access to COVID testing and treatment, increased availability of masks in spaces like jails and detention centers, and asked the county not to impose a mask ban “for any reason.”
