Harry Kane has admitted he is “heartbroken” after England’s Euro 2024 woes, with the Three Lions captain breaking his silence in a lengthy social media post.

Gareth Southgate’s side lost their second consecutive European Championship final on Sunday, a 2-1 defeat to Spain extending their trophy drought to 60 years.

Kane was substituted on the hour mark at the end of a tournament in which he had been criticised for several ineffective performances and looked dejected at the final whistle.

But in an 84-word Instagram message to supporters, the captain vowed to keep fighting and expressed pride in his team’s achievements over the past month.

He also appears to have confirmed that he has no intention of hanging up his international boots.

“We are heartbroken that we were unable to achieve what we worked so hard for,” Kane wrote.

“It was a long and tough tournament and I’m very proud of the boys and the staff for reaching the final. In the end, we didn’t achieve our goal and we’ll have to live with that.”

“But as we always do, we will pick ourselves up, dust ourselves off and be ready to fight again in an England shirt.

“Thank you to all the fans who believed in us and supported us until the end!”

The striker, who was replaced by Ollie Watkins as England searched for a goal in Berlin, was the first Three Lions player to respond to their agony the following morning.

His teammate Luke Shaw responded to the post with a red heart emoji.

Despite scoring three goals, the 30-year-old has been unable to repeat the exploits that lit up his debut campaign at Bayern Munich, leading several pundits to suggest he suffered a mystery injury in the summer.

The leader of the group, in difficulty, was however quick to deny the rumors.

“No, it’s time to talk about personal things,” Kane told BBC Five Live.

“The tournament takes place in different situations. As a player, you face many situations during these tournaments.

“Everyone is dealing with issues and you’re at your peak physically and that’s just the way the game has gone and the way the tournament has gone.

“Of course, from a personal point of view, I would have liked to have played better tonight and the result would have been different, but unfortunately that was not the case.”

But Gary Lineker claimed Kane “wasn’t himself” throughout the competition and sensationally suggested he could walk away from international football.

“I wondered what England would do, what Harry Kane would do? He wasn’t himself in that tournament,” Lineker told The Rest Is Football.

“He’s in his 30s now, Micah (Richards). When I was 30, 31, my legs started to give out on me.

“I retired from international football at 32. At 31 that’s what was happening (my legs were moving) and it’s horrible, it’s horrible.”
