King Charles ‘can understand Donald Trump’ as monarch sends confidential message

King Charles is ‘able to identify with Donald Trump’ after his attempted assassination at a campaign rally this weekend.

The former US president was shot in the ear on Saturday while delivering his opening speech in Pennsylvania.

The next day, Trump flew to Milwaukee, where he was officially announced as the Republican nominee for the November election. In his first interview after the shooting, Trump told the NY Post that he “should be dead.”

Speaking to GBN America, former BBC royal correspondent Michael Cole said King Charles “can relate” to Saturday’s shocking events, recalling the attempted assassination of the monarch himself in 1997.

Cole explained: “In 1994 in Sydney, a young man with a starter pistol fired two shots at him. And I remember very clearly that the Prince of Wales, as he was then called, had a police protection officer called Inspector Colin Trimming, and he jumped on this young man who fired these shots and tackled him to the ground.

“The king stood there, watching with amusement, playing with his cufflinks and observing the scene.”

Sharing his thoughts on the message the king sent to Donald Trump following the incident, Cole said that while the context “is not known,” the letter is expected to be “heartfelt.”

Cole told host Nana Akua: “We don’t know exactly what the content is, but you can expect it to be heartfelt and encouraging because heads of state and the heirs of the head of state all know the dangers that come when you interact with the public.

“It’s not usually an assassin on a roof, but even members of the public. So, as soon as the assassination attempt was announced and the ex-president survived, the king wrote him a note, as is his duty.”

LATEST DEVELOPMENTS:

Noting the positive relationship between King Charles and the former president, Cole revealed the duo “got on really well” during Trump’s state visit to the UK in 2019.

Cole explained: “The King met former President Trump when he was here on a state visit, and had more than one meeting with him, I think they got on very well.

“They became friends because Trump’s mother was from the Isle of Lewis and the Outer Hebrides in Scotland, and they apparently got on very well.”

Reflecting on the King Charles and Trump incidents, as well as other attempted assassinations of royals and political figures, Cole said it has “become a part of life for presidents and also for monarchs.”

Praising the strength of King Charles and Donald Trump, Cole praised the “coolness under fire” but criticised the “chaos” caused by the attempted assassination of the former president.

Cole said: “It’s unfortunate that something like this happened. We’re all very happy that the king and Trump survived, but it’s unacceptable that in a great democracy like America, someone can take matters into their own hands and cause chaos.”

“And the consequences that could have occurred if former President Trump had been killed are absolutely unthinkable. I remember very, very clearly November 22, 1963, the assassination of John F. Kennedy and what followed.

“It was a truly horrific time, and our thoughts and hearts were with the American people at that time and continue to be with them.”
