Liverpool striker Darwin Nunez has expressed his sadness at failing to reach the Copa America final – without mentioning his involvement in the unpleasant post-match scenes as he awaits possible punishment.

Last week, Nunez’s Uruguay were beaten 1-0 by Colombia in the semi-finals. The result caused chaos at the end of the match, with brawls breaking out in the stands in North Carolina, USA.

Nunez was punched and kicked by rival fans after he and several members of the Uruguay national team rushed into the stands to defend family members after their section was stormed by Colombian fans. Coach Marcelo Bielsa blasted the US Soccer Federation, CONMEBOL and Copa America organisers in a fiery press conference.

The former Benfica striker was seen climbing over the stands to confront fans and appeared to throw his hands towards some Colombia fans. He was also seen throwing a chair and later on the pitch hugging his son.

As CONMEBOL investigates the incident, Nunez reflected on the tournament. He wrote on social media: “My first Copa América. Sad not to have reached the final, happy with what we lived, what we learned and what we shared. It continues, let’s go, Uruguay, always!”

After missing the 2021 Copa America through injury, Nunez started all six of Uruguay’s games and scored in the group stage wins over Panama and Bolivia. After a period of rest, Nunez will join new coach Arne Slot for Liverpool’s pre-season.
