Legendary strategy developer launches new submarine military simulation game Silent Depth 2

When it comes to military simulation, I want the emotional experience of piloting a jet, but I don’t want the real, technical details. War Thunder seems like a good compromise. It’s still robust and realistic, but toned down enough that you can pick it up and play without having to learn how to drive a tank. Command and Conquer has always been a pleasantly streamlined RTS that gives you the feeling of organizing an army without the pragmatic rigors. From legendary military simulation and strategy developer MicroProse, the company behind Carrier Command 2, Regiments, and Ground Breach, Silent depth 2 is a new underwater game that is as deep and compelling as it is accessible.

Silent Depth 2 is a cross between strategy, simulation and submarine game. It is set in the middle of World War II and you play as a naval commander patrolling the Pacific Ocean. You have full control over weapons and navigation systems and can choose to engage enemies directly or dive deep beneath the waves to try to avoid combat.

Damage in Silent Depth 2 is precise and multi-layered: a particularly violent battle can render your torpedo parachutes or engines ineffective, forcing you to crawl back to port to repair them. Weather and time of day are also realistically simulated and will have a significant impact on your combat effectiveness. If you spot an enemy convoy, it may be best to wait for a storm to roll in so you can attack them underwater while they struggle against the wind.

The entire Pacific Ocean is recreated and you can explore it. You can command a variety of different submarines and approach each objective however you want. Despite its scale, Silent Depth 2 is described by MicroProse as a “sim-lite”.

If you’ve tried a submarine or other military simulator in the past and are feeling a little burned out by the learning curve, Silent Depth 2 wants to give you the emotional and experiential thrill of realistic combat without the high barrier to entry. Silent Depth 2 launches via Steam Early Access today, Tuesday, July 16. If you want to try it out for yourself, head over here.
