Former Sky Sports Soccer Saturday commentator and Manchester City star Rodney Marsh has been appalled by Gary Neville’s claim that Harry Kane is the best England player of all time.

Neville made the remarks when discussing the England captain’s fitness. The former Manchester United full-back had claimed Kane had not looked fit throughout Euro 2024 – a claim Gareth Southgate later confirmed to Sky Sports, but which also saw the forward awarded the prestigious England Player of the Year award.

It was when discussing Kane’s injuries that the former Manchester United captain said the forward was “the best English player of all time in his position”. His comments also echo those of former Manchester United striker and England legend Wayne Rooney, who also called Kane the “best” English player of all time.

But former QPR striker Marsh was shocked by the comments, claiming Kane is not Tottenham’s best player, let alone England’s best.

In response to a Sky Sports post on X about Neville’s claim that Kane was the “greatest player of all time”, Marsh replied: “My word, he’s not even the best player at Spurs!!” Former Valencia manager Neville said he did not “disagree” with Rooney’s claims that Kane was the greatest Englishman to ever achieve international success and then reiterated his comment by referring to Kane’s disappointing appearance at the Euro 2024 final.

Last May, Rooney said on The Overlap with Neville: “I think Harry Kane is an incredible player.” He then added: “The goals he’s scored, the assists he’s made and the last few years, I’d say he’s the best English player of all time.”

It’s unclear who Marsh thinks is better than Kane in Spurs annals, with Kane being the club’s all-time leading goalscorer, but the debate over Kane being the best English striker of all time is a tricky one for anyone playing devil’s advocate. The former Spurs striker is also England’s top scorer with 66 goals in 97 appearances, while Rooney himself is second on the list with 53 goals in 120 appearances.

Kane also played in two European Championship finals for the Three Lions and won the Golden Boot at the 2018 World Cup, where he helped England reach the semi-final, as well as sharing the Euro 2024 Golden Boot. Former striker Marsh, who spent 11 years working for Sky Sports, was no stranger to finding the net himself, scoring 218 goals during his career.
