Former Fox News anchor and conservative provocateur Tucker Carlson says former President Donald Trump offered to stand guard at his home after protesters came to his Washington home after 2018.

Carlson received the biggest applause at the Fiserv Forum in Milwaukee on the fourth and final night of the Republican National Convention before Trump’s speech.

“It’s a very different feeling than I had imagined,” he said.

Fox News and Carlson parted ways last year, but he remains a hugely popular and influential figure. Carlson began his speech by addressing Trump’s shooting in Pennsylvania. Carlson said the moment solidified his status as a leader.

“Everything was different after that moment, everything that happens in that convention is different,” he said. “When he got up after being shot in the face, covered in blood, and he raised his hand, I thought at that moment that was a transformation.”

Throughout the convention, Republicans sought to humanize Trump. On Wednesday, his granddaughter Kai Trump spoke before her father Donald Trump Jr., describing him as an ordinary grandfather. Similarly, Billy Graham’s son Franklin Graham sought to portray him as a devout religious leader.

“Just because you call yourself president doesn’t mean anything in and of itself. I can call my dog CEO of Hewlett Packard, but that doesn’t mean he is,” he said, before comparing President Joe Biden to a mannequin. “And you hate to say it, but it’s also true that you could take, I don’t know of a mannequin, a dead person and make them president.”

He then repeated the lie that the 2020 election was stolen.

“With enough cheating, it could happen,” he said.

The right-wing provocateur, who himself has been touted as a potential presidential candidate, also praised Senator JD Vance, calling him a friend.

“He’s a perfectly honest man and I have to admit he’s a friend of mine,” he said. “But J.D. Vance has views that are closer to Trump voters than anyone else in Washington. That’s why he’s vice president. That’s democracy.”

Carlson recalled that in 2018, Antifa protesters came to his house while his wife was home.

“The Democratic Party militia,” he said. “I was at work, it was obvious when I was at work because it was public. My wife was alone, they tried to come in the front door and they terrorized her.”

Carlson said the next day, Trump called his wife Susan.

“I hear it, it’s coming,” he said. “And the first thing he says is, ‘I’m going to stand guard in front of your house.’”

Carlson has become one of the most beloved figures in right-wing media. Although he is no longer on television, he hosts a popular show on X, known as Twitter. Earlier this year, he was criticized for interviewing Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Carlson used his speech to say that Trump was not a dangerous or threatening person.

“So I think the whole Trump project is paradoxically being attacked as an enemy of democracy aimed at bringing democracy back to the United States,” he said.

Carlson’s speech was a blow to the Republican Party. Earlier in the convention, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, who had criticized Carlson for interviewing Putin, was booed in response. Conversely, both Vance and Carlson criticized support for Ukraine.

“You don’t see our commander in chief suggesting that we use our military to protect our country or the lives of its citizens,” he lamented. “No. This is for Ukraine. And that’s too much, in fact, it’s too insulting.”

Similarly, throughout the convention, attendees carried signs saying that Trump would end the war in Ukraine.

Carlson’s speech comes amid a series of speeches from numerous other politicians and celebrities, including WWE wrestler Hulk Hogan.

But Carlson said there was another VIP in the room.

“But I say it unequivocally,” he said. “God is among us right now. And I think that’s enough.”
