Joe Biden continues to criticize the press as his political career draws to a close

In what may be one of his final interviews as a presidential candidate, Joe Biden once again took aim at what has become one of his favorite targets: fake news.

Biden, who enjoyed protection from the press throughout a 2020 campaign that saw the media mishandle Donald Trump and ignore legitimate stories, such as the one about key White House adviser Hunter Biden’s laptop, has turned to the press as questions have mounted about his campaign.

Hours before his COVID diagnosis, which UnidosUS President Janet Murguía announced to the world Wednesday in Las Vegas as she explained why the president was an hour and a half late for a luncheon speech, Biden went on the radio with Univision, where he was asked if he felt “betrayed” by the defections of supporters like George Clooney, Michael Douglas, Ashley Judd and Democratic Rep. Adam Schiff.

The embattled octogenarian was lenient with his Hollywood friends and the California congressman, reserving his anger for the trade press.

“And I found some relief in hearing you say you’re not a political journalist,” he told the host, setting up his critique of the media.

“Think about it. There are a lot of very good journalists, but they have no limits. It’s very difficult to stand out, and let me say that there are no editors anymore. You don’t have an editor anymore, so you can’t say it’s not true. They don’t say that anymore,” the president said in a hoarse voice.

He then talked about artificial intelligence and how it can be used to spread fake ads before returning to criticizing the political press.

“So we have to figure out how, not to control the media, but the media has to be uncontrolled, to be able to do whatever it wants. But we have to figure out a way to say that it’s true. It’s fundamentally true. And that’s what we’re interested in this election: trying to expose some of the outrageous things that have been said,” Biden said.

The president’s irritability toward the press has become a standard tactic in what appears to be the final stretch of his half-century-long political career.

“Why don’t you ever talk about the 18, 28 lies he told? Where are you at? Why doesn’t the press ever talk about it? Twenty-eight times, it’s confirmed, he lied in this debate… Seriously, you’re not going to answer the question, but why doesn’t the press talk about all the lies he told?” Biden harangued NBC’s Lester Holt in offering yet another autopsy of his dismal debate with Trump in a recent interview.

At a rally in Detroit last week, Biden tried to emulate Trump by trying to turn the handpicked crowd against the reporters assigned to cover his remarks.

“They hammered me because I sometimes mix up names,” Biden said.

“I say, ‘It’s Charlie,’ instead of ‘Bill,’” Biden said, adding once again that the most scrutinized candidate in American history, Donald Trump, “got a free pass.”
