Johnny Depp Turns to Tarot to Create Art Collection

The actor’s art collection is inspired by the tarot card: his 4 new pieces are called “The Lovers”, “The Empress”, “The Emperor” and “The Force”

LONDON, United Kingdom – Actor Johnny Depp has turned to the iconography of the tarot to inspire an art collection that includes a tribute to his former partner, French actress and singer Vanessa Paradis, and goes on sale Thursday, July 18.

“Tarot” comprises four pieces: “The Lovers,” “The Empress,” “The Emperor,” and “The Force,” each referencing the imagery of the cards.

“I’ve always been extremely curious about tarot,” Depp said in a video.

“There is a great art in the maps themselves, going back ages, and in the invisible art of reading maps.”

“The Lovers” features a well-dressed couple, the man holding a red rose, while “The Empress,” with a female figure wearing a weathered crown, pays homage to Paradis, with whom Depp was in a relationship for 14 years before their split in 2012. They have two children, and Depp has said they remain “very close.”

“Strength” features a staring elephant and reads, “Why do you want to fight something that doesn’t want to fight you?” It’s inspired by a painting Depp did when Paradis was pregnant.

Eyeless but with red lips, “The Emperor” recalls a 17th-century French monarch and is inspired by a work created by Depp during filming. Jeanne du Barry, in which he plays King Louis XV, at Versailles.

The film, which premiered at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival, marked Depp’s first major role since his high-profile 2022 defamation trial against his ex-wife, actress Amber Heard.

Depp’s “Tarot” series, limited to 195 copies and priced at $4,500 per framed copy, follows the actor’s previous collections and will be sold by British art retailer Castle Fine Art. – Rappler.com
