Shocking new video shows the aftermath of a carjacking tragedy that saw an Ohio teacher killed while saving the life of her six-year-old son.

Columbus police released the images hours before a public vigil was held in Canal Winchester, Ohio, on Wednesday to honor 29-year-old Alexa Stakely, who died last Thursday after being struck by her own stolen Honda CR-V.

Two of the three suspects are seen chasing the car, with the third suspect driving, before abandoning the car in a nearby parking lot and disappearing.

Police released the footage along with an updated map showing the area where the suspects were last seen and appealed to residents of The Residences at James Place and The Residences at Akita Lane to check back to see if they might have footage from the early hours of July 11.

Ms Stakely was struck while picking up her son from her babysitter’s residence on Blue Knoll Drive around 1:30 a.m. after returning from her second job as a waitress, suffering a fatal head injury when she was struck by her own car.

Police said the mother loaded her sleeping son into her car but ran to the babysitter’s apartment to retrieve something.

The carjacker then jumped into his car, driving slowly, and drove away, reports WSYX.

Ms Stakely chased the suspect and attempted to stop him before lunging at the car.

New footage shows the suspects fleeing in the vehicle, followed by two other people on foot.

The suspects then allegedly abandoned the car in a nearby parking lot before disappearing.

When police arrived, they found the vehicle parked with the child, Deluca Brynn Foster, still asleep inside the vehicle.

“Ms. Stakely’s family have shared that she died heroically trying to save her 6-year-old son during a carjacking,” Canal Winchester Schools said in a heartfelt tribute.

“Thankfully, her son was not injured and is now with his family. Please keep Alexa’s son, family and friends in your prayers during this difficult time.

“Alexa was passionate about children and speech therapy. She was intelligent and compassionate, and she cared deeply about helping children develop their communication skills.

“She was a wonderful mother, incredibly devoted to her son.

“Ms. Stakely made a difference in the lives of the students and families she worked with and will be missed by so many in our community and beyond.”

Winchester Trail Elementary School, where Stakely worked as a speech therapist, held a vigil Wednesday.

Close friends, colleagues and family members were invited to a private visitation at Grace Fellowship Church in Lithopolis on Thursday.

Ms. Stakely’s obituary states that she will be buried at the church at a later date.

Police arrive at the scene and find six-year-old Deluca Brynn Foster still in the stolen car.
The car was parked in the driveway, idling, when a suspect stole it and drove off.

Stakely was “extremely passionate” about her work and “always had a desire to help others,” which motivated her career choice as a therapist helping young children, according to the obituary.

“While Alexa was extremely passionate about her teaching and providing speech therapy to others, and loved surrounding herself with students she could help, the love of her life was (her son) Deluca,” he said.

A fundraiser has since been set up to help raise $15,000 to support his family through this difficult time.

With the nation moved by Ms. Stakely’s heroism and tragedy, nearly $90,000 has already been raised.
