Attorney General James Announces New Deed Theft Protections: How Will They Work in New York?

Effective today, a new law makes title theft a felony and expands the New York State Attorney General’s powers to prosecute it. Co-authored by Attorney General Letitia James and sponsored by State Senator Zellnor Myrie and Assemblyman Landon C. Dais, the law aims to protect homeowners from scammers.

“Property theft robs New Yorkers of their homes and stability,” said Attorney General James. “This law strengthens our ability to combat these crimes and keep families in their homes.”

The law classifies document theft as grand larceny and extends the statute of limitations. It also gives the Attorney General’s Office the authority to prosecute these crimes statewide. New Yorkers who suspect document theft should contact the Attorney General’s Office for assistance.
