Chelsea midfielder Enzo Fernandez has revealed that surgery on a season-ending groin injury has been a success.

The 23-year-old has been ruled out of the Blues’ final six games of the season after undergoing surgery on a muscle problem which the midfielder says has been troubling him since October.

Fernandez, who was the most expensive player in Premier League history when he joined Stamford Bridge from Benfica in January 2023, admitted the decision to end his campaign early and go under the knife was taken after the pain became “more and more intense” to the point where he could “no longer bear it”.

However, taking to Instagram on Friday, Fernandez revealed that the operation had been a success and that his return to action would see him come back “stronger than ever”.

“My operation was a success, everything went well thanks to God. I needed to have this operation because I had been suffering from pain for about six months,” Fernandez wrote.

“It was something I could avoid by constantly treating myself with injections and medication. But a few weeks ago the pain started to get more and more intense, without any of it having any effect, and it got worse the more I trained and played in a boring way, but I didn’t want to stop participating in the matches I had…

“Every time I play with the Chelsea shirt, as with the national team, I always try to do my best despite all this, but I can’t take it anymore…

“Thank you for your messages, your encouragement and your constant testimony of love. A big thank you to all, I promise you that I will come back stronger than ever.”

In his pre-match press conference on Friday, Mauricio Pochettino defended Chelsea’s decision to allow Fernandez to undergo surgery and miss the final games of the season.

“Enzo Fernandez feels pain, he was not playing in normal conditions and so the most important thing is to solve the problem,” Pochettino said. “If he can’t play, it’s not good for us, for the club and for everyone.”
