The Big Bang Theory was filled with countless moments of scientific jokes and laughter. But it also had its share of deep emotional scenes that left a lasting impact on the audience as well as the actors. Newhart, with his brilliant portrayal of Professor Proton, played a huge role in Sheldon Cooper’s life. But in one scene in particular, the audience’s love for Newhart brought the entire cast to tears.

One such actor was comedy legend Bob Newhart, whose portrayal of Professor Proton added value to Sheldon Cooper’s story. Additionally, Jim Parsons, who played Sheldon Cooper in the series, recounted a particular scene involving Newhart in a past interview with Parade that left the entire cast in tears.

Parsons revisited the emotional experience of filming Bob Newhart’s first appearance on the show. He added that despite a week of rehearsals with the comedy legend, the entire cast was overwhelmed by the audience’s reaction as soon as Newhart came out to perform his scene. The moment was so special that everyone burst into tears, even Newhart himself. He added:

The night we recorded the first scene he did with us, he appeared in the hallway and the show stopped—completely—to a standing ovation from the audience. He cried. I think we all cried. It was profound, and I realized how much I had been stifling all week in rehearsal my knowledge of the depth of my work with Bob, because who the hell can do good work by going, “I can’t believe I’m working with Bob Newhart!” in their head all the time? Nobody. But the dam broke at that point.

Bob Newhart entered the series as Professor Proton in the 22nd episode of season 6, titled The Resurgence of Protons. Additionally, his storyline was so well received that he continued to make guest appearances until episode 5 of season 12, titled The collision of the planets.

Not only in this series, but the late actor reprised his character of Professor Proton in the sequel, Young SheldonAlso, given the recent passing of Bob Newhart, his iconic portrayal of Arthur Jeffries, aka Professor Proton, takes on even more special significance.

Johnny Galecki Shares His Last Interaction With the Late Bob Newhart

After hearing the news about Bob Newhart, Johnny Galecki, who worked with the comic book legend on The Big Bang Theorywas among the first to pay tribute to him. He took to his official Instagram account and spoke about the last conversation he had with Newhart. The actor shared three photos with the late actor with the caption:

In one of his last emails, Bob asked me to stop telling people he was a “nice guy.” While I hate to disobey a hero, I have to say that Bob was a wonderful man and I enjoyed my time with him. Safe travels, my friend.

In the shared post, several celebrities discussed their own interactions with Newhart. John Ross Bowie, who played Sheldon Cooper’s nemesis Barry Kripke on the hit series, commented: “One of the nicest things you ever did was get me a pass so I could show up to an episode I wasn’t even on, just to meet him. A very fond memory.”. Further adding that it was a precious memory for him considering he wasn’t even part of the episode.

Kaley Cuoco also paid tribute through her Instagram Story (via The Hollywood Reporter), with the following caption: “What a dream to see the genius that was Bob Newhart. He was elegant, kind, generous and absolutely hilarious. Every take, every time. An icon forever.” Additionally, Jim Parsons has yet to comment on Newhart’s passing.

Bob Newhart died Thursday after a short illness. The news of his death was confirmed by his publicist.
