Niroshan Dickwella Opts For Review After Being Sidelined, Gets Sent Back In Hilarious Blunder

Galle Marvels captain Niroshan Dickwella made a hilarious blunder during the Lankan Premier League (LPL) 2024 Qualifier 1 match against Jaffna Kings. The match between the two teams took place on Thursday (July 18) at the R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo.

Galle Marvels captain Niroshan Dickwella did not have a very good outing with the bat in the first qualifier of the tournament against Jaffna Kings. However, he can only blame himself for the way he got out. The wicketkeeper-batsman got out himself as his team lost an early wicket in this high-pressure match.

After Jaffna Kings put a total of 177 runs on the board, Alex Hales and Niroshan Dickwella started the chase aggressively. They added 29 runs together in a flash and with the way they were batting, it seemed like they were going to put a big partnership on the board. But that was not the case as the left-hander got away with it cheaply.

On the second ball of the third over, Azmatullah Omarzai bowled a ball which Niroshan Dickwella attempted and missed. The bowler as well as wicketkeeper-batsman Kusal Mendis immediately started appealing as they were convinced that the Galle Marvels captain had robbed him.

The umpire however was not interested and declared the shot not out. But what caught the attention of many people was that Niroshan Dickwella asked for the review as he felt that the umpire had given. But the review was not considered and Omarzai then asked Mendis to conduct the review which revealed that the batsman had gloved the ball directly behind the wicket.

Here is the video:

Niroshan Dickwella scored just 9 runs off 4 balls with the help of two fours. But fortunately, his wicket didn’t cost the team much. After that, Alex Hales (36) played a valiant hand at the top. But the real blitz came from Tim Seifert’s batting and .

The duo slammed half-centuries and added 92 runs for the third wicket. Their sensational performance with the bat saw Galle Marvels chase down the target in 18.1 overs. They will now face Jaffna Kings in the final after beating Kandy Falcons in Qualifier 2.

I thought I was out, caught behind, I didn’t see the umpire – Niroshan Dickwella on his dismissal

Niroshan Dickwella spoke about the win against Jaffna Kings and expressed his happiness over the way his team played. He also spoke about his dismissal, saying he didn’t notice that the referee had given him a not out and hence he opted for DRS. Speaking to broadcasters, he explained:

“I am very happy with the way it has gone so far. We have been exceptional, we have played some very good cricket and there is healthy competition for places in the final XI, it shows what a good team we have. I wanted to give Janith Liyanage a chance at No. 4, he has batted well lower down the order.

“Bhanuka likes to bat at 5 and so we thought of promoting him. I thought I was out, caught behind, I didn’t see the umpire and I saw they were celebrating, I felt it hit my arm and that’s why I did a review,” he concluded.
