The summer of 1999 was a historic year for moviegoers. The first Star Wars film in over a decade was released, Austin Powers went from VHS hit to blockbuster, and an unknown director, M. Night Shyamalan, came out of nowhere to deliver the second-highest-grossing film of the year. The Sixth Sense would also have been the horror film of the year if not for The Blair Witch Project. Daniel Myrick and Eduardo Sánchez’s low-budget phenomenon, released just weeks before a young Haley Joel Osment saw dead people, was a must-see. Heather Donahue’s tearful, terrified confession to her camera in the film immediately became a widely recognized iconographic element, as did the film’s infuriating final shot, which would soon be referenced and parodied in near equal measure.
