Sudanese thug shouts ‘it’s unfair’ to be jailed for attacking pensioner

A Sudanese man jailed for beating an elderly pensioner insulted and shouted at the magistrate as he was sentenced.

Akec Akec, 22, was drunk and under the influence of cannabis when he punched John Drake twice in the face and broke his nose outside his Geelong home.

Another man then used a hockey stick to split the 80-year-old’s head open.

Drake still has scars from the beatings and now suffers from headaches and nosebleeds.

In court today, the 22-year-old accused the magistrate of being “unfair” and of simply receiving drug money from Drake.

The court heard that Akec had been released on bail for other violent offences just five days before the attack.

The schizophrenic had no support in court, including his parents who brought Akec to Australia with his eight siblings when he was eight years old.

He was sentenced to 14 months in prison with an eight-month non-parole period. Since his sentence has already been served, he could be released in six months.

Drake said the attackers had “nothing else to do.”

“What do you do when you want to have fun? ‘Let’s go beat up an old man’: that’s their thing.

“In the past, we went swimming and climbing.”

Drake said the length of the sentence did not matter.

“It doesn’t matter whether he gets out in six months or six years, if he hasn’t learned anything from this experience.”
