Red Wings building goalie room; Good day to Matthew Tkachuk

By adding two NHL-caliber goalies to a team that already had two under contract, some believe Detroit Red Wings general manager Steve Yzerman overplayed his hand at goaltending. However, the data suggests Yzerman has a leg up.

According to a report from TSN, instead of looking for a No. 1 goaltender, NHL teams are now building goalie rooms similar to the quarterback rooms compiled by NFL teams.

Last season, only three NHL goalies — Nashville’s Juuse Saros, Winnipeg’s Connor Hellebuyck and Colorado’s Alexandar Georgiev — played more than 60 games. Thirty-two percent of games were started by backup goalies — the most in five seasons — and another nine percent were started by depth goalies.

That means 41% of all games in the 2023-24 NHL season have not been started by a team’s No. 1 goalie. So when Yzerman added veteran NHL free agents Cam Talbot and Jack Campbell to a goalie locker room already stocked with NHL veterans Alex Lyon and Ville Husso, he wasn’t acquiring too many goalies. He was adapting to the current trend of the game.

The Red Wings in case you missed it

The addition of big winger Vladimir Tarasenko helps expand Detroit’s attacking lines.

Albert and Anton Johansson are both making strides within the Red Wings organization.

Leaving Detroit as an unrestricted free agent, forward Daniel Sprong took a steep pay cut when he signed with the Vancouver Canucks.

The Red Wings ended up paying center Joe Veleno exactly what the market suggested he was worth.

Red Wings Offseason

Forward Trenton Bliss, who split his professional playing career between the AHL’s Grand Rapids Griffins and the ECHL’s Toledo Walleye, signs with the Walleye through the 2024-25 season. He had 72 points last season.

Bliss’ 112 points in a Walleye uniform rank 10th in franchise history.
