Greek exhibition explores art inspired by despots

A perhaps timely exhibition entitled Democracy explores the art inspired by the despots who overthrew him.

Rather than highlighting the enduring appeal of democratic governance, many of the 137 works on display at the National Gallery in Athens, the very birthplace of democracy, use pop art to denounce the political violence of coups and repression.

The somber tone seems appropriate in a year “marked by decisive plebiscites that have a worrying and terminal character and pose difficult questions,” writes The Guardian.
