Destiny Udogie’s new Tottenham shirt number explained as Guglielmo Vicario receives message

Guglielmo Vicario and Destiny Udogie will wear new shirt numbers for Tottenham in the 2024/25 season. Having first joined the team 12 months ago, Vicario has inherited the number 13 and his fellow Italian the number 38.

Ahead of Tottenham’s summer tour of Japan and South Korea, the club have confirmed that both players have new numbers for the upcoming season. The goalkeeper takes over the No.1 jersey vacated by Hugo Lloris following his move to LAFC earlier this year, while Udogie immediately takes over Vicario’s No.13 jersey.

It may come as no surprise to see Tottenham’s number 1 goalkeeper become the club’s new No. 1, but Udogie’s decision to wear the number 13 certainly raised some eyebrows. Many wondered why he hadn’t opted for the number 3 shirt when Sergio Reguilon was not part of the club’s summer tour and was set to leave in the coming weeks.

However, the decision regarding his new jersey number may be an easy one for Udogie. He knows it very well having already worn it in his first season as a Hellas Verona player in the 2020/21 season.

After joining Udinese, initially on loan in 2021/22, he once again chose the No.13 shirt. Udogie has also worn the number 13 on his back on the international stage, wearing it when playing for the Italy Under-17s and Under-21s.

Signed by Tottenham in the summer of 2022 but joining the first team 12 months later after remaining on loan with Udinese for a further season, the number 13 was not available as Vicario had already chosen it after joining the Lilywhites last June. As a result, Udogie opted for the number 38 in his debut campaign in north London.
