Manchester United eyeing right-back options with ‘offers expected’ for Aaron Wan-Bissaka

Manchester United are ‘expecting offers’ for right-back Aaron Wan-Bissaka this summer and could move to replace the former Crystal Palace man in the transfer walk.

Wan-Bissaka arrived to much acclaim in 2019, touted as one of the best emerging defensive talents in English football after a stellar season with his boyhood club Palace.

But while he was a regular under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, whose managerial tenure coincided with a push to recruit young British players, a combination of injuries, loss of form and the resurgence of Diogo Dalot has made the 26-year-old more of a squad player than a starter.

In January, United activated an option in Wan-Bissaka’s contract to push back its expiry until 2025 and prevent him from leaving as a free agent this summer. This has protected his transfer value to some extent and Sky Sports announced that he would be fired if he received a “suitable” offer.

There is no list of interested clubs, but a return to Palace has been mooted in the past. It was once thought that United would use Wan-Bissaka as part of a proposed deal to tempt Michael Olise to Old Trafford – before he made the move to Bayern Munich.

Selling Wan-Bissaka would allow for a replacement to be found. Should that happen, United are said to have considered several options, including Bayer Leverkusen’s Jeremiah Frimpong and Monaco’s Vanderson.

One of the criticisms levelled at Wan-Bissaka over the years has been his lack of attacking prowess. That is where Frimpong, in particular, excels. The Dutchman scored nine goals and provided as many assists in 31 Bundesliga appearances as a full-back in Xabi Alonso’s title-winning side and 90 min revealed in early July that United and rivals Manchester City had joined Barcelona in pursuing the player.

He also has a €40m (£33.7m) release clause which is set to expire this summer, encouraging clubs like United to act quickly to avoid paying a hefty transfer fee.

Vanderson is a newcomer to the squad. The 23-year-old Brazilian is a similar option as an attacking full-back and would likely be cheaper than Frimpong.
