White House announces new AI measures as Apple signs on to voluntary commitments

The White House announced that Apple had “signed the voluntary commitments” under the administration’s previous executive order on AI. “In addition, federal agencies reported completing all 270-day actions mandated by the executive order on time, after completing all other required tasks on time to date.” From a report: The executive order, “based on voluntary commitments,” was backed last year by 15 major AI companies. The White House said the agencies have taken steps “to mitigate the safety and security risks of AI, protect Americans’ privacy, advance fairness and civil rights, defend consumers and workers, promote innovation and competition, advance American leadership in the world, and more.” It’s an effort by the White House to mobilize the government “to ensure America leads the way in seizing the promise and managing the risks of artificial intelligence,” according to the White House.
