Fostering a child can turn your world upside down, but for a dedicated guardian, it can become a heartwarming mission.

Enter Maya, an 8-year-old girl with a traumatic past, who is now thriving in a loving environment.

However, when the decision to enroll Maya in a private school was met with criticism from a family member, tensions escalated.

Read the story of how an act of compassion turned into a family feud.

I have been hosting Maya (8) for about 7 months now.

I work at a children’s hospital and Maya came in about 10 months ago with some pretty horrible injuries.

She stayed in the hospital for 2.5 months and underwent 3 surgeries as well as lots of physical and occupational therapy.

She had no family so I took care of her while she was there.

Well, that’s a good start…

I bought her clothes and toys, taught her how to do her hair, watched Frozen 50 times, stayed the night before/after surgeries or when she had a bad day, cooked for her, introduced her to fruits and vegetables.

I ended up falling in love with this little girl and had to keep her.

I was able to get my license pretty quickly through my job, so when she came home from the hospital, she came straight to see me.

Amazing.

The public school sent a teacher to the hospital and then home for a while, then when she was able to go to school she was placed in a special education class in a public school with plans to eventually move her into regular classes.

There wasn’t really anything wrong with public school or his class, it just wasn’t a good fit.

She wasn’t making any friends, wasn’t making any progress with her speech therapist, wasn’t learning much even though her teachers tried and her school offered her 5 hours of private tutoring a week, and she would hold my hand and nap as soon as we got home (she doesn’t nap much).

Well, that doesn’t seem quite right.

I decided to look at private schools and found a Montessori inspired school about 45 minutes from my home.

We did a visit, she did the assessment and she was admitted.

She started in March and she is doing very well. She is speaking more and more clearly, she is learning a lot and she even has two friends.

However, school is expensive.

After my financial aid, I will pay $1,200 a month for her tuition and when she starts daycare, it will be an additional $450 a month.

Frame.

I was talking to my sister about Maya and this school and how she and her husband might consider sending it for their oldest daughter (2, preschool starts at 3) and she asked me why I was sending a child that I might not be able to keep to a private school and that it would be a waste of money if she went to a family member.

I told him not to worry about me “wasting” my money on Maya and that I would be happy to pay if it helps him.

She continued to insist and I told her that if that’s how she felt about my child, I should walk away from her and not help her with her children anymore.

Now she calls me sensitive and claims I’m abandoning my family.

What is this ?

Despite the love and commitment shown towards Maya, not everyone agrees on what is best for her.

The heart wants what it wants, but sometimes family drama gets in the way.

Here’s what the folks at Reddit had to say about it…

All this person sees is love.

It seems that fostering love and education is not a good idea for some family members!

The sister seems to be a far from exceptional person.
