Srinagar: Five Indian Army jawans, including a captain, were injured and a Pakistani “intruder” was killed on the spot in a gunfight that has been raging along the Line of Control (LoC) in Kupwara district of northwest Kashmir valley since Saturday morning.

One of the army jawans later died in hospital, army sources said, adding that the condition of another injured jawan is “critical”.

Army officials said an exchange of fire broke out between Indian troops and a group of armed intruders suspected to be members of Pakistan’s Border Action Team (BAT) and terrorists at Kamkari post near the LoC in Trehgam area of Kupwara early Saturday. “The intrusion of the gunmen was foiled. However, the exchange of fire is continuing,” they said, adding that the injured Army jawans were quickly evacuated to a nearby medical facility from where they were shifted to the Army’s 92-base hospital in Badami Bagh Cantonment in Srinagar.

According to one report, a PoJK resident was caught in the crossfire and killed on the spot. Another report said that he was an intruder who was shot dead by vigilant Indian troops.

According to the report, two intruders managed to return to PoJK amid intense gunfire. The report, citing Army sources, said a group of three intruders threw a grenade and then fired their automatic rifles at an Indian Army forward post.

The Indian army retaliated, triggering a gunfight in which one “intruder” was killed, the report said.

The Srinagar-based army’s 15 Corps, also called Chinar Corps, said in a message on ‘X’: “There was an exchange of fire with unidentified personnel at a forward post at Kamkari in Machhal sector on the Line of Control. One Pakistani was killed while two of our soldiers were injured and have been evacuated. Operations are underway.”
