Farhat Azam loses hand and leg performing stunts on moving train

A few days ago, a video of a man performing dangerous stunts on a Mumbai local train went viral. The Railway Police registered a First Information Report in the case and launched an investigation after which they identified the accused Farhat Azam Sheikh. They went to his house to arrest him and found that he had neither a hand nor a leg. He had lost his limbs while performing another stunt later. A railway official revealed the shocking information on July 26.

On July 14, footage from Mumbai’s Sewri railway station went viral on social media. It shows a young man performing stunts and hanging on to a local train in Mumbai. In the video, the man is seen holding on to the handlebars of a moving train’s doors while sliding down the platform. After sliding down this way for about 15 seconds as the train accelerates, he jumps onto the carriage just before exiting the platform. The video from Sewri station is almost 5 months old, dated March 7 and was recorded by one of his friends on the train.

Social media users shared the video and demanded action on the matter. Mumbai Central Divisional Railway Manager responded, “Thanks for the information. RPF VDLR station has been directed to register the case against the unknown passenger shown in the video. Efforts are on to trace him. We request all concerned to stop such dangerous and life-threatening practices for themselves and passengers.”

“The Central Railway has issued a stern warning against dangerous stunts following the release of a video on X (Twitter) on July 14 showing a young boy indulging in risky behaviour while boarding a moving train and urged the railway authorities to take swift action. After it was brought to public notice, the Railway Protection Force (RPF) station at Vadala Road registered a complaint against the unidentified individual seen in the video. Efforts are on to trace and apprehend the person involved,” an official said.

Farhat Azam Shaikh, a resident of Antop Hill in Wadala, was identified as the boy after the video was made public. After a complaint was filed against him, the authorities went to his house to arrest him. But they were shocked to learn that he had already lost his left hand and leg in a similar accident at Masjid railway station in Mumbai on April 14. The railway administration immediately took him to St George Hospital, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) for treatment after the accident. Considering his condition, the police did not arrest him.

“The Railway Protection Force (RPF) of the Central Railway recently identified Shaikh as the individual in the video. On April 14, 2024, while attempting another perilous stunt, Shaikh sustained serious injuries, leading to amputation of his left arm and leg. He is currently bedridden due to his critical condition and has not been arrested due to the seriousness of his medical condition,” an official said on July 26.

The police have issued a strict warning regarding such stunts and the press release mentioned that Farhat Azam Shaikh has faced immense difficulties in performing his daily duties as a result of these stunts. “He has appealed to all passengers through a video to stay away from such acts, which are not only illegal but also life-threatening. Central Railway requests passengers to refrain from such dangerous stunts/activities which are life-threatening to both the persons involved and other passengers,” the release added.
