About Toura Golf

Toura Golf was born out of a passion for building golf clubs. It all started when Jon Blackham struggled to find a blank clubhead without a logo. So he decided to take matters into his own hands. He created Toura Golf for those like him who enjoy building their own golf clubs and appreciate a purely forged product that stands out by not standing out.

The Canadian company is known for its minimalist designs and for producing limited quantities of heads as well as one-of-a-kind models. With wedges, putters and complete iron heads available for purchase, Toura Golf is a club builder’s dream.

What the testers said

First impressions and aesthetics

The minimalist, logo-free design of the Toura Golf irons has received positive feedback. Testers appreciated the clean, professional look, as well as the high-quality packaging that enhances the unboxing experience. David Leighton Reid said, “The clean look of these irons is truly stunning and adds a professional touch to my set.”

Construction process

The build process was detailed and a highlight for our test group. Testers were provided with all the necessary components including club heads, shafts, ferrules and grips to complete the build. All of our testers had varying levels of experience building clubs. This meant that the forum thread provided valuable insight into how to properly build golf clubs and also helped teach others about proper club building processes.

Here are some examples.

Preparing the trees: Cut the shafts to the desired length and prepare the tips for insertion into the club heads.

Club head assembly: Applying epoxy to the ends of the shafts and carefully inserting them into the club heads, ensuring correct alignment and seating. This also included preparing and finishing the ferrule.

Installing the handles: Apply double-sided tape and grip solvent to slide the grips onto the rods, making sure they were aligned correctly before letting them set. Testers also shared tips and tricks on how to make this process even easier.

Customization: Stamping, oxidation, special bits and more were part of several stellar builds.

Tester azstu324 said: “Building these irons from scratch was a unique experience that gave me a deeper appreciation for the craftsmanship involved. The high-quality materials and precise tolerances made the assembly process smooth and enjoyable.”

Performance on the course

The Toura Golf irons performed impressively on the course. While they aren’t the most forgiving irons, our testers highlighted several key aspects of their performance on the course.

Feeling and feedback:

The S25C forged steel provides exceptional feel and responsiveness. JRDuck40 noted, “The feedback and feel of these irons is exceptional, delivering a level of precision I’ve never experienced before.” Testers reported a solid, satisfying feel on well-struck shots and helpful feedback on mishits.

Ability to format shots:

The irons were able to deliver precise shots, allowing testers to shape shots with ease. The workability of the irons was praised, with azstu324 stating, “I was able to shape shots effortlessly, whether I needed a draw, a fade, or a straight shot.”

Distance control:

Testers found that the irons offered excellent distance control, which helped them achieve consistent distances. ctg44 mentioned, “These irons have improved my putting abilities, allowing me to hit more greens in regulation with better distance control.”

Trajectory and rotation:

The ability to control trajectory and spin was highlighted. Testers could adjust the trajectory of their ball to suit different conditions, improving their versatility on the course. JRDuck40 noted, “The control over trajectory and spin allowed me to adapt to different conditions on the course, which gave me an edge in my game.”

Consistency and precision:

The irons’ precision and accuracy were highly praised. Testers reported improved consistency in ball striking, which led to better overall performance. Ctg44 noted, “The accuracy of these irons has greatly boosted my confidence, knowing that I can rely on them for accurate shots.”

However, testers noted that these were still smaller blade or cavity-back irons designed more for accuracy, so there were noticeable differences when shots were not struck in the center of the clubface. They agreed that these irons would be best played by those with better ball-striking abilities.

Tester ctg44 added: “These irons have improved my hitting abilities, allowing me to hit more greens in regulation.”

Community engagement during testing

Testers appreciated the opportunity to share their build experiences with the MyGolfSpy community. The collaborative aspect of the evaluation process provided valuable insight and feedback from other golf enthusiasts. David Leighton Reid said, “Engaging with the community and sharing our build stories made the experience even more enjoyable and informative.”

Final Notes and Reflections

Even with the build portion of this test, we wanted testers to evaluate the iron sets as they would any other member in a test. That meant a full review and a score out of 100 on the final review.

The Toura irons received scores of 96, 93, 92, and 96. When we asked our testers to wrap up with their final thoughts, here’s what they said.

David Leighton Reid. “The Toura CB irons are definitely a keep for me. After getting used to the smaller, less offset head, I really enjoyed playing these irons. In my opinion, the Toura CB irons are just as good as my PXG irons. Or even the Mizuno irons I’ve used in the past.”

JRDuck40: “I was shocked to see that the Toura Golf CBs did as well as they did. I thought I was stuck with my 101Ts and I was completely wrong… If you are looking for something that is not part of the big 4 and want that premium quality, you need to put Toura on your DTC shortlist.

Japanese prestige

CTG44: “If you’re looking for a custom iron set that will give you absolutely incredible feel, pair it with a high-end golf ball that can be curved to any specification you need (vertical, flat, stronger, weaker, etc.), is reasonably forgiving on almost any contact, and just looks great. They’re actually reasonably priced for a hand-forged Japanese iron. Now go get your Toura CB iron set before they sell out. That is, if you’re willing to spend some time on the range tuning your distances and understanding spin rates and ball flight.”

Azstu324: “Kyoei forged and finished the clubs for Toura Golf, but I created them. This is exactly the experience that Toura Golf offers by offering these beautiful blank raw heads. Just like the first blow of the forging hammer on the bright amber carbon steel gives soul and life to the golf club head. I too put a piece of my soul into these clubs. I sincerely want to thank Toura Golf for this incredible experience!”

Overall experience

The overall experience with the Toura Golf irons was extremely positive. Testers appreciated their craftsmanship, minimalist design and exceptional performance. The manufacturing process added a unique and enriching dimension to the evaluation, making testers more connected to their clubs.

Testing the manufacturing of Toura golf irons was a rewarding experience for MyGolfSpy testers. The high-quality materials, exceptional performance, and rewarding manufacturing process made these irons a remarkable choice for golf enthusiasts.

Testers recommended Toura Golf irons to golfers who value high-quality, customizable equipment and enjoy the hands-on experience of building their own clubs. Performance benefits and community involvement aspects were also highlighted.
