Many have re-dived into the game and have been pleasantly surprised by the attention to detail in the world, gameplay, secrets, and companions. However, there was still a lot of criticism regarding its story, the decision to go with a voiced protagonist, the poor role-playing mechanics, the endings, and more. There was still this feeling, especially among some long-time fans of the franchise, that it just didn’t feel like a To fall game (which is saying something given that some players have lobbied these same critics against Fallout 3).

The fervor may have faded and each title has returned to more conservative player numbers – although Fallout 4 continues to generate excitement following its next-gen update – but there’s a new To fall city ​​experience. In development since 2019, Fallout: London is a mod for Fallout 4 It’s more of a total conversion. Although it seemed like it wouldn’t come to Steam due to the Next-Gen update breaking several things, it’s finally available for PC players.

The installation result is very mixed (long story short: use the GOG version), and the performance leaves something to be desired. Nevertheless, it is an experience that turns out to be delightfully surprising to the point that fans of the franchise must play it, or even try it.

The name of the game gives away the basic premise. What if players ventured into the post-apocalyptic nuclear wasteland of London? The series has primarily focused on the United States of America, allowing for pop culture references and commentary on consumerism. This is the first time players can see how another part of the world was affected by the bombs that were dropped, although it is unofficial.

There’s no Vault-Tec – no Super Mutants, Deathclaws, or other elements that will be familiar to longtime fans because, well, the forced evolutionary virus never made it across the ocean. While that may sound disappointing, it also means you have to adapt to new threats. Plus, the game is set in the year 2237 between Fallout 1 And 2. The atmosphere is also completely different from Fallout 4 – Goodbye, Sole Survivor seeking revenge on her partner and reuniting with Shaun. Hello, silent, amnesiac protagonist who is the subject of an unknown experiment.

You wake up in a containment tube with two scientists commenting on your progress under the guidance of a mysterious individual named Mr. Smythe. When the Wanderers, one of the many factions roaming post-nuclear London, break in and start shooting, you are freed. You have time to try to figure out what this strange facility is, fighting off the Ratshrews (a substitute for the Molerats) and scavenging for supplies. As you escape, Mr. Smythe seems pleased with your choice, encouraging you to venture further. A hop, a skip, and a jump into the tube – which then crashes, an apt metaphor for this mod – and the world opens up.

It can’t be overstated how different London is from the Commonwealth. Anti-Brotherhood of Steel propaganda messages abound. Signs indicating where historical figures once resided can be seen on buildings. Nuka Cola is in limited supply compared to tea. The Reliant Robin, or its remains, can be found alongside other vehicles. The attention to detail is on another level and goes a long way towards making the experience feel more than just a rehash. Fallout 4.

The core gameplay is also very different. Guns aren’t as common, with the team focusing more on melee and close-quarters combat. A more dangerous approach and a higher base difficulty than Fallout 4 This means things hurt a lot more. Feral ghouls may still look like stumbling horrors, but a single clean hit can fracture your limbs.

Picking your fights, knowing when to use guns and backing off to prevent things from going horribly wrong is not only essential early on, it’s mandatory. This doesn’t necessarily mean you’ll be fighting solely with melee weapons throughout the experience. It emphasizes the desperation of trying to survive with the bare necessities, slowly rising to the top.

Perhaps the biggest improvement over the base Fallout 4 The experience is all about making important decisions. You can join the Vagabonds and take on different tasks, leading to multiple quests and choices (while getting a nice Butterfly Knife). Alternatively, you can visit the Thamesfolk and learn more about this mysterious facility and potentially the identity of the Gentry.

Perhaps you want to forgo both of these choices and explore the world unhindered. Ultimately, it’s up to you to decide, and while the impact of each decision hasn’t been fully revealed yet, they seem important. You have skill checks that range from being able to get water from wanderers and potentially save someone’s life (or make their condition worse) to more weighty choices like deciding whether or not to disrupt a supply line.

Although developer team FOLON calls this a “condensed” version of London, covering 15 boroughs (roughly half the size of the real-world city), the map size is the equivalent of the Commonwealth and Far Harbor from Fallout 4. Additionally, while billed as a DLC-sized mod, it features 200 quests and promises 90 hours of gameplay. It feels like a brand new game – admittedly, one built on the foundations of an existing game, but still offering plenty of new content for players to discover.

The developer describes different factions, from the rebel 5th Column to the militaristic Tommies to the Camelot-inspired Knights of the Round. You’ll even get to meet Mr. Smythe’s mysterious organization. They all seem to have dedicated quests, but the catch is that they only make up a small percentage – TEAM FOLON lists 20 factions with varying story paths and endings. The fact that all of this is free is simply mind-boggling.

It’s a shame, then, that this isn’t the most optimized mod out there. Players who install it via GOG are reporting crashes after about an hour of play. Some don’t even make it through, experiencing consecutive crashes in the process, even with officially recommended mods like Buffout 4. These will of course be addressed, but many fixes may not be deployed immediately, leading to frustration.

The installation experience on Steam is also much more difficult – at least GOG has heavily discounted Fallout 4: Game of the Year Edition to lower the barrier to entry. It’s also worth noting that your mileage may vary depending on the quality of the voice acting, which can come across as impressive at times and flat at other times. However, the cameos, which we won’t spoil, are excellent.

Despite its optimization issues, it can’t be overstated how incredible this mod is, especially considering it’s being made by an independent team spread across the globe. Even though it’s been in development for five years, the quality of the experience, from its interpretation of London to its representation of British culture, is hard to believe. It speaks volumes once again to the Bethesda modding community and what they’re capable of accomplishing, whether it’s much-needed fixes or new experiences that can rival the base game in many ways.

Although this does not review all the elements, Fallout: London is definitely worth checking out, whether you’re looking for something a bit more substantial beyond the current assortment of mods, are a fan of the series, or are just curious to see what it’s all about. Just remember to be mindful of space.
