Alien: Romulus: a clip highlights the past work of director Fede Alvarez

The tagline for the original 1979 Alien movie was that “in space, no one can hear you scream.” What that phrase fails to mention is that xenomorphs appear to have very good hearing, and can seemingly pick up on almost every sound within a spaceship or colony. This ability is on full display in a new clip from the upcoming film in the franchise, Alien: Romulus.

In the video, Isabela Merced can be seen as Kay, one of the unlucky young girls who thought it would be a good idea to scavenge for materials from abandoned ships. In this scene, Kay is unarmed and trying to sneak past a Xenomorph. And the alien in question seems to be actively searching for Kay and listening to her intently while trying to remain as quiet as possible. This is reminiscent of how Jane Levy’s character hid from Don’t Breathe’s blind killer, Norman Nordstrom (Stephen Lang).

Despite her best efforts, Kay is caught off guard when a Xenomorph appears nearby and carries off two bodies. It is unclear whether the bodies are from Kay’s crew or if they were originally stationed on the ship, which is now overrun with Facehuggers and Xenomorphs.

Cailee Spaeny also stars in the film as Rain Carradine alongside David Jonsson as Andy, Archie Renaux as Tyler, Spike Fearn as Bjorn and Aileen Wu as Navarro. Don’t Breathe and Evil Dead director Fede Álvarez directed Alien: Romulus from a script he co-wrote with Rodo Sayagues. The film will be released in theaters on August 16.
