Aerosmith pull out of touring, citing permanent damage to Steven Tyler’s voice last year

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Aerosmith says Steven Tyler’s voice was permanently damaged by a vocal cord injury last year and the band will no longer tour.

The iconic band behind hits like “Love in an Elevator” and “Livin’ on the Edge” released a statement Friday announcing the cancellation of the remaining dates of their tour and provided an update on Tyler’s vocals.

“He has spent months working tirelessly to get his voice back to where it was before his injury. We have watched him struggle despite having the best medical team at his side. Unfortunately, it is clear that a full recovery from his vocal injury is not possible,” the band said in a statement. “We have made a heartbreaking and difficult, but necessary, decision as a band of brothers to retire from the touring scene.”

Tyler announced that he injured his vocal cords in September during a concert on the Peace Out: The Farewell tour. Tyler said in an Instagram statement at the time that the injury caused some bleeding but that he was hopeful the band would be back after postponing a few shows.

Tyler’s soaring vocals have fueled Aerosmith’s massive catalog of hits since its formation in 1970, including “Dream On,” “Walk This Way” and “Sweet Emotion.” The band, formed in a small New Hampshire town before relocating to Massachusetts, is known as “The Bad Boys from Boston.” They were about to embark on a 40-date farewell tour when Tyler was injured.

“We have always wanted to blow you away during our performances. As you know, Steven’s voice is an instrument like no other,” the band said in a statement to fans Friday.

“It’s been an honor to have our music be a part of yours,” the band said. “In every club, on every massive tour, and in grand and private moments, you’ve given us a place in the soundtrack of your lives.”

Aerosmith is a Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductee and four-time Grammy winner. In addition to Tyler, its members include Joe Perry, Brad Whitford, Tom Hamilton and Joey Kramer.
