Comer announces investigation into whether Harris did ‘anything’ to resolve border crisis

The GOP-led House of Representatives is launching an investigation into Vice President Kamala Harris for her role in the Biden administration’s struggle to bring the border crisis under control.

House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer (R-KY) announced the investigation Tuesday in a letter to U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) Commissioner Troy Miller, requesting documents and communications between CBP and the Executive Office of the Vice President regarding the southwest border or illegal immigration.

In March 2021, President Joe Biden tapped Harris to lead efforts to stem the tide of migration to the U.S. southern border with Mexico and other countries. At the time, Harris said the government “needs to address the root causes … that are driving people to make this journey.” Harris has subsequently faced criticism, including from Republicans, as migration issues have persisted.

“It is unclear what steps, if any, Vice President Harris has taken to address the border crisis,” Comer wrote. “Instead, she has asserted that ‘we have a secure border to the extent that that is a priority for any nation.’ The Committee is seeking to understand whether Vice President Harris has ‘done anything’ to address the worst border crisis in American history.”

Comer was referring to a quote published by the New York Post in which an unnamed Border Patrol agent said Harris “has literally done nothing…she came to the border one time and we cleaned up all the foreigners so it looked good.”

In recent years, Comer added, “more than 8 million illegal immigrants have been intercepted entering the country at the southwest border, and more than 1.6 million have fled. Massive illegal immigration under the Biden-Harris administration has contributed to the murders, sexual assaults, and serious bodily injuries committed against scores of Americans by illegal immigrants.”

Harris is running for president now that Biden has ended his reelection campaign. On Tuesday, before Comer released his letter to Miller, Harris chose Tim Walz, the liberal Democratic governor of Minnesota, as her running mate. Walz has pushed for Minnesota to become a sanctuary state and signed a law allowing illegal immigrants to get driver’s licenses.

Last month, six House Democrats joined Republicans in passing a resolution condemning the vice president as a “border czar” and the Biden administration for its failure to curb illegal immigration. Among its provisions, the resolution also warns that “continuing Biden and Harris’ border policies would be disastrous for the United States and the American people.”

House Republican Conference Chairwoman Elise Stefanik (R-NY), who introduced the resolution, said in a statement that “Harris and all elected Democrats are responsible for this historic border crisis that has turned every community into a border community. It is time for us to return to President Donald Trump’s border security policies that prioritize the safety of American citizens.”

Comer is taking over the Harris investigation as his corruption-focused impeachment inquiry into Biden appears to be winding down. The impeachment effort has led to hearings and criminal referrals against the president’s son, Hunter, and his brother, James, but to date has not resulted in articles of impeachment. A final report could still be released.
