A woman stabbed to death in a city centre last night is believed to be a mother of three in her twenties.

Neighbours reported armed police were spotted in the area after officers found the fatally injured woman last night in Burrell Road, Ipswich, Suffolk.

Police launched a manhunt for his killer after he died shortly afterwards, but have yet to make any arrests.

Neighbours reported that armed police were seen in the area near Ipswich train station following the death of the woman, who has not yet been identified.

A small police plane spent almost three hours flying over central Ipswich last night, apparently searching for a suspect.

The scene around a row of three houses remained cordoned off by police today with a section of Burrell Road closed and traffic diverted.

The area near Ipswich’s waterfront has a large number of houses converted into studios and apartments.

A skate park and paths along the banks of the River Orwell, at the back of Burrell Road, also remained cordoned off.

Several posts on Ipswich community groups described the woman as a mother of three who knew her alleged attacker.

A statement from Suffolk Police confirmed that a murder investigation had been launched following a “fatal stabbing”.

He added: “Emergency services were called to Burrell Road shortly after 7.10pm following reports that a woman had been stabbed.

“Police officers attended the scene and found a woman who had suffered serious injuries. Despite receiving treatment from emergency services, the woman, aged in her twenties, sadly died a short time later.

“A police cordon has been deployed to the scene and the road has been closed at Burrell Road while investigations continue. No arrests have been made at this time.”

Chief Inspector Tam Burgess of Suffolk Police added: “Emergency services, including a number of police resources, have been deployed to the scene and people in the area will continue to see an increased police presence throughout tonight and the coming days.

“A murder investigation has been opened and we are in the early stages of our enquiries to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident, but it is understood that the parties are known to each other.

“We would like to hear from anyone who may have witnessed the incident or has any information, however small.”

Anyone who witnessed the incident or has information is asked to contact police.

Drivers with dash cams, or anyone with CCTV cameras or doorbells in the area, are asked to review all footage between 6.30pm and 7.30pm for anything that may be relevant.
