NYPD releases photo of suspect wanted in deadly Caribbean Carnival parade shooting; Mayor Adams and event organizers meet

CROWN HEIGHTS, Brooklyn (WABC) — Two weeks after a deadly shooting at Brooklyn’s Caribbean Carnival parade, police have released a photo of the suspect they are looking for.

The new development came Thursday night, shortly after Mayor Eric Adams and organizers met to discuss security at future events.

Event organizers said the meeting, which was attended by a number of city agencies, was positive.

“The NYPD, the sanitation department and the mayor’s office have come together to make sure we don’t have a repeat of what happened this year,” said Jelani DeShong of the American Caribbean Day Carnival Association.

During the September 2 parade, a shooter jumped the police barrier on Eastern Parkway. Four people were injured and one man was killed.

“There was one idiot who shot five people. You can’t subtract from the number of guns that were taken away the number of fights and conflicts that were stopped,” Adams said.

Many conflicts have been stopped by nearly 30 different groups, dubbed “violence interrupters.” Next year, the plan is to start working on the streets a month in advance.

TMK members said they had ended dozens of disputes.

“Some days it felt like there were fights going on one after another. And that was before the parade,” Haynes said.

Adams said that while organizers complained about a lack of communication and resources, overall everyone came away feeling better prepared to ensure next year’s event is safe.

“If you have these meetings, these post-meetings, and you’re not honest in your conversations, then you’re not going to get the outcome that you want,” Adams said.

Adams said the city is considering installing metal detectors along the parade route.
