A plane carrying 58 passengers and four crew members crashed in the Brazilian state of São Paulo.

The twin-engine turboprop plane was flying from Cascavel, in the southern state of Paraná, to the main airport in the city of São Paulo when it crashed in the city of Vinhedo, the airline Voepass said.

Images circulating on social media show a plane descending vertically, forming a spiral as it falls.

“There is still no confirmation on how the accident happened or the current situation of those on board,” the airline said in a statement.

Local authorities said the plane landed on a residential building.

Brazilian television channel GloboNews showed images of a large area of fire and smoking debris in an area full of houses.

Police and firefighters are on scene and local hospitals have been alerted.

Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva observed a minute of silence at an event he attended.

He posted the news of the accident on social media: “Very sad. All my solidarity with the families and friends of the victims.”
