Australian B-girl Raygun wasn’t afraid to look a little ridiculous on the international stage, and it earned her at least one famous fan.

Adele shouted the Australian breakdancer’s viral routine during her Munich residency performance on Saturday, August 10.
“It’s all my friends and I talk about,” Adele said of the dancer’s unconventional moves. “I think it’s the best thing that’s ever happened to the Olympics, ever.”

Adele is busy in the middle of a month-long stay at a specially built outdoor arena in the Bavarian capital, but that clearly hasn’t stopped her from attending the Summer Olympics.

“I didn’t even know breakdancing was an Olympic sport these days. I think it’s really cool,” she said. “I can’t figure out if it was a joke… If you haven’t seen it, leave the show and Google it.”

It’s safe to say that Australian breakdancer Rachael “Raygun” Gunn has taken the internet by storm. Gunn competed in the first-ever breakdancing event of the Paris 2024 Olympics on August 9, facing off against France’s Sya Dembélé in the preliminary round of the competition. The dancer, whose real name is Rachel Gunnwas heavily criticised after losing her three Olympic breakdancing matches 54-0. At various points, the university professor appeared to touch her toes while lying on her side and danced around the dance floor, imitating a kangaroo.

After the competition, Gunn shared a photo on Instagram with a quote encouraging fans not to be afraid to be different.

“Go out and represent yourself, you never know where it’s going to take you,” she shared.

Gunn delivered a similar message to reporters after her loss. “What I wanted to do was come here and do something new and different and creative — that’s my strength, my creativity,” she said. “I was never going to beat these girls at what they do best, dynamics and power moves, so I wanted to move differently and be artistic and creative, because how many opportunities do you get in a lifetime to do that on an international stage?”

Australia Team Leader Anna Meares defended Raygun after his performance went viral.

“I love Rachael and I think what happened on social media with the trolls and the keyboard warriors, and taking those comments and giving them airtime, was really disappointing,” the chef de mission said at a news conference Saturday. “Raygun is an absolutely valued member of this Olympic team. She represented the Olympic team, the Olympic spirit with great enthusiasm. And I absolutely love her courage. I love her character and I’m very disappointed for her, that she was attacked the way she was.”
