*NSYNC’s ‘Bye Bye Bye’ Hits Top 10 on Worldwide Charts Outside the US

*NSYNC’s “Bye Bye Bye” enters the top 10, rising from #16 to #8 on the Billboard Global Excl. US chart. The song, which was a smash hit in 2000, is now being propelled by its sync in the box office blockbuster Deadpool and Wolverinewhich has grossed over $1 billion worldwide since its premiere on July 26.

The Billboard Global 200 and Global Excl. US charts, which debuted in September 2020 — where Billie Eilish reigns supreme with “Birds of a Feather” — rank songs based on streaming and sales activity from more than 200 territories around the world, according to Luminate’s compilation. The Global 200 chart includes global data, and the Global Excl. US chart includes data from territories excluding the United States.

The rankings are based on a weighted formula incorporating official streams only on subscription and ad-supported tiers of audio and video music services, as well as download sales, the latter of which reflect purchases from full-service digital music retailers worldwide, with sales from direct-to-consumer (D2C) sites excluded from the rankings calculations.

“Bye Bye Bye” surges globally outside the U.S. with 42.4 million streams (up 50%) and 3,000 sales (up 5%) outside the U.S. from August 2-8, driven by its early placement in the U.S. Deadpool and Wolverinefeaturing Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman. The track debuted a week earlier, marking the group’s first entry on the charts.

Beyond the holiday hits, “Bye Bye Bye” – which reigned Billboard‘s Pop Airplay chart for 10 weeks and the all-format Radio Songs chart, and peaked at number 4 on the U.S.-based multimetric Billboard Hot 100 in 2000—is the second-longest-running song to reach the global top 10 outside the United States; Kate Bush’s 1985 single “Running Up That Hill (A Deal With God)” reigned for one week in July 2022, initially revived by its Netflix sync Strange things and then promoted as a single.

(Now in third place, Sophie Ellis-Bextor’s “Murder on the Dancefloor” from 2001 reached No. 9 on the Global Excl. US chart last February, renewed thanks to her appearance in the film Salineas well as the buzz on TikTok.)

“Bye Bye Bye” also climbs from No. 18 to No. 12 on the Global 200 and re-enters the Hot 100 at No. 45. It attracted 10 million official streams (up 31%), 4.8 million radio audiences (up 8%) and 2,000 sales in the U.S. from August 2-8.

To date, the anthem has 4.8 billion viewers, 517 million official on-demand streams, and 1.3 million downloads sold in the United States. It won Best Pop Video at the 2000 MTV Video Music Awards (where *NSYNC performed the song) and earned a Grammy nomination for Record of the Year.

The Billboard Global 200 and Billboard Global Excl. US charts (dated August 17, 2024) will be updated on Billboard.com tomorrow, August 13.
