Alien: Romulus Director Reveals the Hilarious Note Ridley Scott Gave Him

hits theaters this week and will see director Fede Alvarez (Evil Dead, don’t breathe) taking the reins of the Stranger franchise. Ridley Scott originally held those reins as creator of Strangerand there was no question of him passing the torch to Alvarez without some sage advice – such as only Sir Ridley Scott could give.

In an Instagram post before Alien: Romulus‘, Fede Alvarez shared the concise words Ridley Scott had for him, before production:

Dear Fede,
Good luck.
Good health.
Happy hunting.
Don’t do anything stupid.
Very best
Best wishes, Ridley Scott

It’s no secret that Ridley Scott is extremely touchy when it comes to the Alien franchise. In fact, Alvarez has previously revealed how worried he was about making Alien: Romulus good enough to impress Sir Ridley:

“I wanted him to see it before anybody else,” Álvarez told director Guillermo del Toro during a convention panel. “And everybody warned me that Ridley was really tough. He’s really tough, especially when it has to do with his movies. He was really tough on Blade Runner (2049), which I thought was a masterpiece, and he had a problem with it because it’s really hard for him because it’s his job. I asked him about the new ‘Top Gun’ and he was like, ‘Meh.’ I was like, ‘What are you talking about?’ And he was like, ‘My brother’s was original and this one is like, ugh.’ He really respected him, but you could see how hard he was. So I was like, ‘I have no chance of winning this one.'”

Ridley Scott’s reaction to Alien: Romulus is perhaps the biggest show of support for the film:

“He came into the room and said, ‘Fede, what can I say? This is really great,’” ?lvarez shared. “For me, it was like… My family knows it was one of the best moments of my life to have a master like him, who I admired so much, watch a movie that I had made — and especially something like this… and talk to me for an hour about what he had liked about it. One of the best compliments he ever gave me was, ‘The dialogue is great. Are you the writer?’ Yes!”

Alien: Romulus stars Cailee Spaeny (Priscilla, Civil War) and presents David Jonsson (Industry), Archie Renaux (The Shadow and the Bone), Isabelle Merced (Transformers 5, Madame Web), Spike Fearn (The Batman) and Aileen Wu.

Alien: Romulus will be in theaters this week.
