Panchayat Raj and Rural Development Minister Danasari Anasuya alias Seethakka has expressed solidarity with the doctors protesting at Gandhi Hospital following the rape and murder of a woman doctor in Kolkata.

She visited the hospital on Wednesday and addressed the protesting doctors. She said the incident was “shocking” and “a disgrace” to society, stressing the urgent need to combat atrocities against women, which she compared to society returning to the Middle Ages.

The minister said that women, who are considered equal to gods, must be respected and protected. She stressed the importance of instilling these values from a young age, starting in schools. “We teach everyone that women must be respected and that we cannot ignore those who do harm,” she said, calling for collective responsibility to ensure the safety of women.

Ms Seethakka reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to combating the drug menace and protecting women, pledging to implement strict laws and make long-term plans to prevent such incidents in future.

She added that she would discuss issues related to women’s safety with Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy to improve their safety across the state. She assured that the government would work to ensure safety of women at workplaces in Telangana.
